Serious about reducing line of duty deaths? Serious about improving awareness of firefighter health? Let’s see just how serious.

On the latest Firefighter Netcast episode, Chris Naum’s Taking It To The Streets Looking Forward Through The Rear view Mirror, I was asked my thoughts on the one thing I believed the fire service should focus its attention on in 2011. So, I said…
“Every publisher, expo group out there should give one full day of their expo schedule to providing free health and fitness screening to all attendees. You guys subscribe to the magazines, pay to go to the shows, buy from their advertisers – it’s the least they could do if they are serious about your health and reducing LODDs.”
One full day. No other training, classroom sessions, or lectures. Just physicals, medical screenings, stress tests.
Lets see.

May I suggest starting even smaller, with food. Quit giving away candy at the booths. Have some veggies or apple quarters. Extend it to the junk food purveyors that service the venue. Nothing like a 400 pound firefighter waiting in line for a cheese dog and a quart of soda.
If the fire service aims large, first, then we’ll end up with satisfying small steps. Unfortunately, the exposition teams are limited in trying to restrict the food vendors at their respective locations. Same goes for the restaurants down the block. Let’s tackle the issue of departments not being able to afford these medical exams first.
