Manhattan fire with reports of people hanging out the windows.
Lower East Side apartment fire is one of two fires, the other in Queens, where the FDNY was faced with multiple victims. Squad Company 18 responded on the 10-77 for Box 124, at 388 Pearl Street. As companies responded, dispatchers gave reports of people hanging out the windows of the eighth floor, where the fire was said to be located.
"Right away we knew time was of the essence," said Battalion 1 Chief Ron Schmutzler. "If people are already on the ledge, it tells me it's already bad inside."
